Truckee Bike Trails – Maps & Guides
Truckee bike trails, like the other featured areas in Bike Tahoe, are blessed with a wide variety of recreational resources, bike trails, and a cool downtown shopping district with historical significance as a result of westward emigration during the Gold and Silver boom in the mid 1800’s. Moreover, there is a key distinction in which Truckee stands out and that is its surrounded by lakes, a famous trout stream (Truckee River), and a world-class lift-served mountain bike park that annually hosts pro-circuit competitions.
There is something for everyone looking to enjoy bicycling in the Truckee area. One Truckee bike trail, ideal for families with young children, is a beautifully paved Truckee River Legacy Trail that begins in a regional park and travels alongside the Truckee River. The park is a perfect setting for a family picnic with all the typical park amenities – lawn, picnic tables and rest rooms. On the path are several bench rest stops and informational placards describing details about the local wildlife and past historical activities in the area.
Road cyclists can enjoy riding the Historical Donner Pass Road (formerly U.S. Highway 40) and crossing the famous Rainbow Bridge that is a popular location seen in many TV commercials. The highway name is in memory of the ill-fated Donner-Reed Party who during the winter of 1846-47 were trapped in their attempt to cross over the summit. In honor of these families is the Donner Memorial State Park complete with museum, camping, fishing and water sports. The Park is easily accessible as it is on the ride route. This popular road ride travels along the shores of the glacially formed Donner Lake in route to the summit and/or you can ride around the Lake if not ready for the summit climb.
Mountain bikers can challenge themselves at Northstar California world-class mountain bike park. It is the only lift-served bike park in Northern California. Here it is wise to get local guidance in helping you match your bike handling skills with the appropriate trails because there are extreme rock gardens and jumps for the more technically experienced riders. One of the cool aspects of the bike park is that it begins and ends in the Northstar Village. Here you can rent and/or purchase bikes and accessories, and enjoy retelling your adventures with family and friends over a pizza and beer – how fun is that?
These are just a couple of the popular Truckee bike trails options. There are more to discover here in Bike Tahoe and at the local bike shop.
